Neighbors wait out Rock River flooding

Warmer weather and melting ice can be a welcome combination, but also a dangerous one as the flooding threat increases because of it.

The National Weather Service reports the Rock River will crest later this week.

Local 4’s Tahera Rahman spoke with neighbors about how they feel ahead of the flooding.

They say they’re not necessarily worried about the flooding, it happens every year and it’s the price they pay for the view.

But ice does add some concern.

One neighbor says floating ice slabs slammed against her home last year.

The impact took out part of her porch.

“It is kind of a worry to think about the ice moving again, because they’ve melted down now. Those ice slabs were like 12, 13 inches thick and you could hear them hitting the side of the house, and we came out and the deck was just kind of leaning down,” says Alice Dailey.

She says they’ve repaired and reinforced the porch and hope that it’s strong enough this time around.

Besides that, she says she and her husband let mother nature take her course.

“Usually we try to go to the grocery store and we get stocked up on everything we have to have. But it’s usually only three or four days, something like that, so you can get by,” says Dailey.

Right now a spokesperson for Moline Public Works says there are no preparations for the flooding, because it’s still early.

The Rock River is expected to rise significantly tomorrow.

The spokesperson says the river might spill onto some spots on roads, but it should not be a huge impact on drivers.
